About Class 1
Class 1 provides a happy and exciting learning environment where the children are fully involved in all aspects of their learning. We aim to teach the children through practical activities that enable them to draw links and apply their learning across the curriculum. Children always enjoy our weekly outdoor sessions allowing us to we follow up in class learning. We often go to the forest area on some afternoons (if the weather is nice).
Phonics, maths, English and handwriting are taught and practised by all children daily. Many of the foundation subjects are taught during topic sessions. For example, the children will use ‘The Three Little Pigs’ story as a basis for their English, DT, Art, Music, Computing and Science learning in our first topic ‘Grand Designs’. All subject areas will get their coverage throughout the year. In addition to the topic work, the children will do weekly RE and PSHE, with PE twice a week.
P.E. is taught on Tuesday and Friday afternoons. In Spring term, Class 1 go swimming on Friday morning which uses one of our P.E. slots.
Please send your child with jogging bottoms as the morning session can get a little bit chilly in Autumn, and we will be outside unless it is raining hard!
During Year 1, children will complete the National Phonics Screening Check. This is usually in June, and include real and alien words. Children are assessed every two weeks to ensure they are progressing at the right speed for them. We follow the Read, Write Inc. phonics programme; you can find some useful phonics resources below:
